The Dean of Cork, the Very Reverend Nigel Dunne, had graciously invited all our members to an escorted tour of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral to take place in 2014 during our inaugural year. This was realised as:
A GRAND TOUR
Realising Burges’ vision of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral
Friday, 21st March 2014
11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Richard Wood is the curator of the exhibition at the Glucksman Gallery, “Searching for the New Jerusalem: the Art of William Burges”.
Richard was delighted to conduct a Grand Tour in two parts for members of CorkDFAS.
Part One: the Glucksman Gallery: commenced at 11:30 a.m. for an hour.
Richard gave an eloquent guided one-hour tour of the cartoons on display at the Gallery, explaining the sequence of these original preparatory drawings by William Burges for St Fin Barre’s Cathedral.
This was followed by lunch together at the Glucksman Gallery Café. Twenty-eight of the thirty-five members on the Grand Tour enjoyed a set menu together.
Part Two: St Fin Barre’s cathedral: commenced at 2;30 p.m. again for about an hour.
Richard followed up the morning session with a guided tour of the cathedral where he demonstrated how the cartoons turned into reality.
The Committee would like to thank Martin Dier at St Fin Barre’s for suggesting the notion of a Grand Tour and for his invaluable mediation in realising this initiative.
